161. John 17:20-23 – Unity in Christ
Unity in Christ
📖 John 17:20–23
20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;
21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:
23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”
Sometimes it feels easier to follow Christ alone. Fewer conflicts, fewer disappointments, fewer people who can let you down. But in this prayer, Jesus clearly shows that Christianity is not meant to be a solo journey.
🤝 Unity is not optional — it’s the goal
Jesus doesn’t just wish for unity — He prays for it. And not only for the disciples of that time, but for all future believers. That means this directly includes us.
👉 Unity is not an “extra” in the Christian life.
👉 It is part of God’s plan for the Church.
⸻
🌍 We are not called to isolate
In the previous passage (John 17:14–19), Jesus says that His followers are in the world, but not of the world.
This creates a balance:
❌ not blending into the world
❌ but also not running away from it
And now another important truth is added:
👉 we are not meant to isolate from one another
Sometimes people choose this path:
“I’ll believe on my own — no church, no community.”
But Jesus prays for the opposite:
👉 not individuals, but a united people
⸻
🔗 Unity modeled after the Trinity
Jesus sets an incredibly high standard:
👉 “as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You”
This is not just external agreement. It’s deep inner unity:
in purpose
in love
in spirit
This kind of unity cannot be produced by human effort alone.
👉 It is only possible in Christ.
⸻
✨ The glory that unites
Jesus says:
👉 “the glory… I have given them”
This means believers already have what makes unity possible:
God’s presence
a new nature
a shared identity in Him
We are united not by being the same,
but by sharing the same source of life.
⸻
🔥 Unity as a witness
A powerful statement:
👉 “that the world may believe”
The world does not see God directly,
but it sees the relationships between believers.
When there is:
love instead of conflict
support instead of competition
forgiveness instead of offense
👉 it becomes evidence that Jesus is real.
⸻
❤️ Loved as the Son is loved
The most radical truth:
👉 “You have loved them as You have loved Me”
This means:
God loves believers with the same love He has for Christ.
And that same love is meant to be visible in our unity.
⸻
💡 Conclusion
Unity in Christ is not just a nice idea — it is a powerful spiritual testimony.
👉 We are not called to live in isolation
👉 We are not called to be identical
👉 We are called to be united in Christ
