175. John 19:23–24 – Casting Lots for Jesus’ Clothing
Casting Lots for Jesus’ Clothing
John 19:23–24
Biblical Passage
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.
24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

👕 Dividing the Clothing at the Cross
Right after crucifying Jesus, the soldiers began dividing His clothing.
For them, this was normal practice. The belongings of an executed person became property for the soldiers. Most likely they divided:
sandals,
a belt,
an outer cloak,
a head covering,
and other parts of His clothing.
But among these items was a special tunic — a seamless garment.
⸻
🧵 Why Was the Tunic Valuable?
John specifically points out:
“the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.”
This kind of garment was difficult to make. It:
required a lot of handwork,
was considered high quality,
and was more valuable than ordinary clothing.
That is why the soldiers said:
“Let us not tear it.”
They wanted to keep it whole.

🎲 Casting Lots at the Foot of the Cross
To decide who would receive the tunic, the soldiers cast lots. They may have used dice or small marked stones.
To them, it was just a random game of chance.
But something far greater was happening beside them.
While they argued over a material possession, the Son of God was dying above them.
⸻
📖 Fulfillment of Prophecy
This event was not an accident.
Hundreds of years before the crucifixion, Psalm 22 foretold:
“They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”
— Psalm 22:18
Even the details of Christ’s suffering were known by God beforehand.

💰 What Were People Looking for at the Cross?
Some people were looking for:
clothing,
profit,
entertainment,
political victory.
But at that very moment Christ was offering:
salvation,
forgiveness,
hope,
and a way back to God.
A person can stand very close to Christ and still care only about earthly things.
⸻
❓ What Are We Looking for in Jesus?
Sometimes people come to God:
only for help,
only for solutions to problems,
only for blessings.
But Christ offers something far greater — Himself.
The soldiers wanted Jesus’ clothing.
But do we truly seek Christ Himself?

✨ Main Thought
At the cross, people were dividing material possessions.
But at that same place, God was giving the world eternal salvation.
