128.John 13:12-15-An Example of Care, Not a Ritual

An Example of Care, Not a Ritual

Gospel of John 13:12–15

12. When He had washed their feet, put on His outer garment, and returned to His place, He said to them, “Do you understand what I have done for you?

13. You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.

14. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

15. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.

🧠 Do You Understand What I Have Done?

After washing the disciples’ feet, Jesus asked them a question: “Do you understand what I have done for you?”

The disciples saw the action, but it was important for them to understand its meaning. Jesus wanted them to see in this moment not just an unusual gesture, but an example of how His followers should treat one another.

That is why He says:

“I have given you an example.”

This was not meant to establish a new religious ritual. It was a model for how disciples should live

🧺 Not a Ritual but a Principle for Life

In the ancient world, washing someone’s feet was a normal part of everyday life. People walked on dusty roads, and guests often had their feet washed when they entered a house. Today this custom has almost disappeared, so repeating the literal action is not the main point of this passage.

Jesus is teaching a principle: His followers should be willing to serve and care for one another.

Humility is not expressed through a specific ritual but through simple acts of love and help

🤝 Humility That Is Seen in Actions

This idea connects with what the apostle Paul later wrote in Epistle to the Philippians 2:3:

“…in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”

Humility is not only an attitude of the heart. It becomes visible when it appears in our actions.

What Paul later explained with words, Jesus showed His disciples through a living example

🧩 What This Looks Like Today

Today “washing one another’s feet” can take many simple forms of caring for others.

For example:

— a boy helping a younger girl tie her shoelaces

— someone carrying a child across a large puddle

— a husband helping his wife wash the dishes after dinner

— an adult helping a child clean up a room or meeting space

These are small actions, but they show attention and care for other people.

Sometimes serving others simply means noticing that someone is struggling and choosing to help

✨ Following the Example

Jesus ends His explanation with these words:

“that you also should do just as I have done to you.”

The disciples were not meant to remember this moment only as a story. They were meant to bring this example into their daily lives.

The example of Christ teaches us to notice the needs of others and to be ready to help. In this way humility becomes visible in everyday life.
