132.John 13:31-35-The New Commandment

📖 The New Commandment

John 13:31–35

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him.
32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him at once.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’ so now I say to you.
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
35 By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

📜 A New Commandment

Jesus says:

“A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another.”

Love had already been commanded earlier.

📖 Leviticus 19:18
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Why then does Jesus call it new?

A New Standard of Love

Previously the standard was loving others as yourself.
Now the standard is higher:

“as I have loved you.”

Christ’s love is:
• sacrificial
• patient
• ready to serve
• ready to forgive.

The disciples had just seen this love in action when Jesus washed their feet.

👥 Love Within the Community

Jesus says:

“Love one another.”

This refers to relationships between the disciples. The church was designed as a community of people with:
• different generations
• different gifts
• different levels of spiritual maturity
• different cultures.

Therefore love becomes the foundation of relationships.

🌍 The Main Mark of a Disciple

Jesus says:

“By this all people will know that you are My disciples.”

He did not say that disciples would be recognized by:
• knowledge
• eloquence
• ministries
• projects.

The main mark is love among believers.

⚠️ A Warning for Servants and Leaders

A person may be:
• a successful minister
• a good preacher
• an organizer of projects
• knowledgeable in Scripture.

But if he does not love his church and other believers, it is a serious spiritual warning sign.

The apostle Paul wrote:

📖 1 Corinthians 13:2
“If I have all knowledge… but have not love, I am nothing.”

The Formation of the Core of the Church

At this moment Jesus is speaking to the closest circle of disciples who will continue His mission. Here the core of the future church is being formed.

He does not give a complicated structure or many rules. The main principle of the new community is love between the disciples.

🤝 A True Disciple Will Not Try to Live Without the Church

The command “love one another” assumes life among other believers. Love cannot be practiced in isolation.

Therefore a true disciple of Christ will seek:
• fellowship with believers
• prayer together
• support and guidance
• opportunities to serve others.

🔗 The Connection to the Command to Love God

When Jesus speaks about love between disciples, it does not cancel the command to love God. Instead, it is expressed through relationships with other believers.

The apostle John explains:

📖 1 John 4:20
“If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar.”

Love for believers becomes the visible expression of love for God.

❤️ The Foundation of Love

Love does not begin with human effort, but with receiving God’s love.

📖 1 John 4:19
“We love Him because He first loved us.”

Christ loves us →
we receive that love →
we begin to love others.

🎯 Conclusion

The main mark of a true disciple of Christ is love for other believers.
