148. John 15:18-27 – Future Persecution
Future Persecution
📖 Gospel of John 15:18–27
⸻
18 If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you.
19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
20 Remember the word that I said to you: a servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.
22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23 He who hates Me hates My Father also.
24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.
25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, “They hated Me without a cause.”
26 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
⸻
Context: what is happening here
Right after speaking about love, friendship, and joy (John 15:9–17), Jesus reveals another side:
👉 following Him will bring resistance from the world
👉 the closer you are to Christ — the greater the contrast with the world
❌ not: “something went wrong”
✅ but: “this is exactly how it’s supposed to be”
⸻
Persecution of the apostles and believers
History confirms Jesus’ words:
• Peter — crucified upside down in Rome
• Andrew — crucified on an X-shaped cross in Greece
• James — beheaded by order of King Herod
• Thomas — killed in India
• Paul — executed by the sword in Rome
👉 These people could have denied Christ and saved their lives,
but chose to remain faithful to the end.
Thousands of early Christians in the Roman Empire were:
• thrown to lions
• crucified
• burned alive
— simply for calling on the name of Jesus.
⸻
Welcome to the club
📖 John 15:20
“If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.”
👉 You are not alone
👉 You stand in the same line as Jesus and the apostles
👉 Persecution is not random — it is expected
⸻
Is this a bad sign… or a good one?
❌ “If people reject me, something must be wrong with me”
✅ If you are rejected because of Christ — you are with Him
📖 John 15:19
“…I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you”
👉 The world does not hate its own
👉 It reacts to those who are different
⸻
The context of joy (very important)
👉 Persecution ≠ loss of joy
👉 Persecution = confirmation of the path
💡 Paradox:
pressure on the outside + joy on the inside
⸻
Why does the world hate?
📖 John 15:21
“Because they do not know Him who sent Me”
👉 The reason is spiritual blindness
People are not ultimately rejecting you —
they are rejecting God in you.
⸻
The role of the Holy Spirit
📖 John 15:26–27
👉 The Holy Spirit:
• testifies about Jesus
• gives you words and courage
• strengthens you under pressure
This is not theory — this is real help when:
• you are afraid
• people mock you
• you feel pressure
⸻
Main idea
👉 Being with Jesus does not guarantee acceptance
👉 But rejection is not failure — it is a sign of belonging
⸻
Summary
If the world rejects you because of Christ, it is not a mistake but a confirmation that you are walking with Him; you are not alone — you stand in the same line as Jesus and the apostles, and the Holy Spirit gives you strength to stand firm even when it is hard.
