The Holy Spirit Continues His Work in Believers

John 16:12–15

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.
14 He will glorify Me, for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.
15 All that the Father has is Mine; therefore I said that He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.”

Connection with the Previous Passage

In John 16:8–11, the Holy Spirit brings a person to Christ by convicting:
1. That the main sin is unbelief in Jesus Christ
2. That Christ is the true standard of righteousness
3. That God’s judgment is real

This is the moment when false foundations collapse and a person realizes their need for a Savior.

But in John 16:12–15, we see how God continues working in the believer:
The Holy Spirit no longer convicts from the outside, but works within — guiding into truth, revealing God’s plan, and pointing to Christ.

First, the Spirit brings a person to Christ.
Then, the Spirit leads a person to follow Christ.

📚 Guides into Truth

Jesus says the disciples are not ready to receive everything yet. Even three years with Him did not make them instantly mature. God reveals truth gradually, according to spiritual growth.

The Holy Spirit is not about emotions for the sake of emotions. His role is to teach, explain, and deepen understanding of truth. Where the Spirit is at work, a person begins to understand Scripture more clearly.

🔮 Declares What Is to Come

Jesus says: “He will declare to you the things that are to come.”
This was fulfilled through the apostles, who received revelation about the Church and future events.

This gives confidence:
the future is not chaotic — it is under God’s control.

✝️ Glorifies Christ

The key mark of the Holy Spirit’s work is this:
He always makes Jesus the center.

Not emotions, not people, not atmosphere —
but Christ.

If “spirituality” shifts the focus away from Jesus,
it is no longer a biblical focus.

Conclusion

The Holy Spirit is our main teacher, leading us into a deeper knowledge of Christ.
