91. John 8:52-59 – The I AM

The I AM

 John 8:52–59

52 The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.’ 53 Are You greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do You make Yourself out to be?”

54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing. It is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ 55 But you have not known Him. I know Him. If I were to say that I do not know Him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know Him and I keep His word.

56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and was glad.”

57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”

58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

59 So they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.

 What Does the Name “I AM” Mean?

The phrase I AM is not a name in the usual sense, nor a religious title. It is a description of God’s nature. In Exodus 3:14 God reveals Himself as I AM WHO I AM,” showing that His existence does not depend on time, causes, or circumstances. God did not begin to exist — He simply is.

When Jesus says,

“Before Abraham was, I AM,”

He deliberately uses language that Scripture applies only to God.

 Bullying as an Opportunity to Reveal the Truth

By this point, the conversation has completely lost any respectful tone. The Jews mock, insult, and accuse Jesus. Yet He does not defend Himself or step away from the pressure. Instead, Jesus uses the ongoing bullying as an opportunity to redirect the conversation to Abraham the highest spiritual authority in their eyes.

In doing so, He lifts the discussion from personal insults to the level of eternity and the history of salvation.

 Why Comparing Ages Doesn’t Work

The Jews think in terms of chronology:

“You are not yet fifty years old…”

But Jesus breaks the logic of that comparison entirely. He does not say He is older than Abraham. He says that His existence does not begin within time at all. His being precedes history, precedes the incarnation, precedes Abraham himself.

 A Declaration of His Essence

John 8:58 is not a metaphor or a poetic image. It is a direct declaration of Jesus’ essence. He claims the same mode of existence that Scripture attributes only to God — eternal, self-existent, and independent.

 An Attempted Killing as Confirmation

The reaction of the Jews speaks louder than any commentary. They are willing to:

• violate Roman law, which forbade unauthorized executions;

• ignore the Law of Moses, which required a proper trial and witnesses;

• do it inside the temple itself.

Such a response only makes sense if they heard blasphemy. They clearly understood that Jesus was speaking of Himself as the I AM, the Eternal One, possessing the nature of God.

 Either Messiah or Impostor

After the words “I AM,” there is no neutral ground left. Jesus cannot be merely a “good prophet” or a moral teacher. He is either deliberately deceiving people or truly is who He claims to be.

All the elements of the text — His words, the context, and the reaction of His listeners — lead to one conclusion: Jesus is the Messiah and the I AM, not a part of history, but the One who stands above history itself.
