87. John 8:33-36 – True Freedom
True Freedom
John 8:33–36
33.They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can You say that we shall be set free?”
34. Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.”
35. “Now a slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son remains forever.”
36. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
“We Are Already Free”
The people Jesus was speaking to were confident in their freedom. They relied on their ancestry, religious background, and correct beliefs. In their minds, freedom was a matter of status: we are children of Abraham, therefore we are free. But Jesus immediately moves the conversation to a deeper level — not external freedom, but internal reality.
A person can have no chains on their hands and still live as a slave.
The Slavery You Don’t See
Jesus speaks plainly: “Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.” This kind of slavery is deceptive because it often looks like choice and pleasure. A person feels in control at first, but over time sin begins to make the decisions. This is not about an occasional failure, but about a lifestyle — a direction that slowly pulls a person downstream.
Only a Dead Fish Goes With the Flow
This phrase perfectly illustrates Jesus’ point. Going with the flow is easy. It requires no resistance, no struggle, no decisions. But that is exactly how something lifeless moves. A living fish swims against the current. It takes strength, purpose, and inner life. In the same way, life with God moves against the current of sin, habits, and excuses.
If a person simply “goes along with everyone else,” that is not freedom — it is a form of slavery disguised as normal life.
Slave or Son
Jesus uses the image of a household. A slave may live in the house, but does not belong to it permanently. His position is temporary and uncertain. A son, however, remains in the house forever. He has a name, an inheritance, and security. The freedom Jesus offers is not just release from chains — it is a change of status from slave to son.
The Freedom the Son Gives
Jesus ends with a powerful statement: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” True freedom is not the ability to do whatever you want, but the ability not to be controlled by sin. It is the freedom to say “no” to what destroys and “yes” to truth, life, and God.
Conclusion
Sin always promises freedom, but it delivers slavery. Jesus offers a harder path than going with the flow, but it is the only path that leads to real life.
Freedom is not doing whatever you want.
Freedom is when sin no longer rules you.
