89. John 8:39-47 – Either with Christ or with the devil. No compromises

John 8:39–47

Either with Christ or with the devil. No compromises

 Biblical Text (John 8:39–47)

39. They answered Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.

40. But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.

41. You do the deeds of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father—God.”

42. Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.

43. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word.

44. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

45. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.

46. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?

47. He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.

 Not lineage, but likeness

The Pharisees are confident because they rely on their ancestry: “Our father is Abraham.”

But Jesus shifts the conversation. In Scripture, a son is defined not by blood or claims, but by whose character and actions he reflects.

Abraham received the truth from God. They, however, want to kill the One who speaks God’s truth to them.

Love for God is tested by one’s response to Christ

Jesus speaks the key sentence of the entire passage:

“If God were your Father, you would love Me…” (v. 42)

It is impossible to claim God as Father while rejecting the Son. God is received as Father only through Christ.

 No neutral ground

Then Jesus says words that cannot be softened without distorting their meaning:

“Your father is the devil” (v. 44)

This is not an insult or an emotional outburst. It is a spiritual diagnosis.

Jesus makes it clear: if a person is not of God and does not receive the Son, that person is not standing in between two sides.

 Everyday examples

This reality is easy to understand in ordinary life.

Fishing.

If you almost caught the fish, you caught nothing.

An airplane.

The plane departs at 7:00. A “compromise” of 7:30 does not save you. You either made it—or you didn’t.

Light and darkness.

When the light is turned off, the room does not become neutral—it becomes dark.

Silence and lies.

When a lie is spoken and no one objects, silence effectively takes its side.

The same principle applies here. Neutrality is an illusion.

Conclusion of the passage John 8:39–47 speaks clearly, without gray areas:

• God does not become Father through ancestry or religion

• Love for God is impossible without receiving Christ

• Neutrality does not exist

• Belonging is revealed by whose voice a person listens to

Either a person is with Christ—or they are not. And therefore, either they are of God, or they have another father.

This is a hard reality, but that is exactly why Jesus speaks it— not to humiliate, but to save.
